At least 700 people killed in clashes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Stockholm, February 2 (Hibya) - According to Sky News, the United Nations has announced that more than 700 people were killed this week in clashes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Congolese Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that 773 bodies were found in hospital morgues in Goma and its surroundings after the latest attack by rebels who seized control of the eastern city.
The ministry also added that more bodies were lying in the streets as morgues in the region exceeded their capacity.
The UN shared similar figures and added that it is estimated that around 2,800 people were injured in the Goma region between January 26 and 30.
Recently, M23 rebels seized control of Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo and the capital of North Kivu province, which hosts lucrative gold, coltan, and tin mines.
After taking control of the city, it was reported that the Tutsi-led rebels were advancing towards Bukavu in South Kivu but were stopped on Friday by Congolese forces supported by the Burundian army.
Sky News also reported that their news team in the region was attacked.
