"China urges the parties concerned to remain calm and exercise restraint to prevent further escalation of tensions," a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement on Sunday.

"China urges the international community, especially influential countries, to play a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability," the spokesperson added.

Beijing also warned of "spillover effects" to other areas in the region.

Last week, Washington asked Beijing to urge Tehran not to launch an attack on Israel.

But US government officials said they had seen no evidence that China was pressuring Iran, according to the Financial Times.

The Chinese Communist Party-controlled Global Times wrote in a message on X, which it later deleted, that the escalating conflict was caused by the UN Security Council's "failure to condemn the Israeli attack" on Iran's embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus in April.

Other Asian countries also warned that the conflict could spread and called for calm.

Japan's Foreign Ministry condemned the Iranian attack and pledged to "assist through all available diplomatic means to prevent the conflict from worsening."

The Indian government expressed "grave concern at the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran that threaten peace and security in the region."

Beijing issued a travel warning on Sunday, urging Chinese individuals and companies in Iran to strengthen their security, according to state-controlled Chinese media.

China Southern Airlines canceled all flights to Iran on Sunday, according to Chinese media.
