Ghebreyesus: Polio vaccination campaign in Gaza reached 602,795 children
Geneva, February 27 (Hibya) - WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the five-day mass polio vaccination campaign in Gaza has reached 602,795 children under the age of 10.
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus stated that the five-day polio vaccination campaign in Gaza was completed yesterday, reaching a total of 602,795 children under 10.
He emphasized that the ceasefire allowed healthcare workers to reach more children compared to previous vaccination rounds in 2024. "Among them were children who might have been missed due to population displacement and those who were inaccessible due to insecurity," Ghebreyesus said.
Ghebreyesus stressed that eradicating polio depends on fully vaccinating every child and ensuring continuous access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene, and adequate nutrition, adding:
"However, the only medicine all children in Gaza need is lasting peace. WHO, UNICEF, and their partners continue to call for a permanent ceasefire that will ensure long-term health and well-being."
