Lazzarini: The lasting consequences of the conflict in Syria remain deep for Palestinian refugees
New York, December 7 (Hibya) – UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that camps such as Ayn al-Tal, Yarmouk and Dera, which once hosted one-third of Palestinian refugees in Syria, have been largely destroyed.
Lazzarini emphasized that the long-term consequences of years of conflict in Syria remain profound, especially for Palestinian refugees.
He noted that the camps of Ayn al-Tal, Yarmouk and Dera, once home to a third of Palestinian refugees in Syria, have been severely damaged, while 40 percent of Palestinian refugees remain internally displaced, living in extreme poverty and severe food insecurity.
Lazzarini stated that UNRWA is increasing its efforts to restore essential services in the camps by rebuilding schools, clinics and community centers to serve the growing number of returnees.
He added that the Agency also provides explosive ordnance risk education, which is vital to protecting people from the constant threat of death and injury, noting: “But our work is chronically underfunded. We must be provided with the means to do more. This is not only about aid; it is about restoring dignity, offering hope and contributing to renewed stability.”
