Lithuanian court finds party leader guilty of hate speech against Jews
Stockholm, December 5 (Hibya) – A Lithuanian court on Thursday found the leader of one of the parties in the country’s governing coalition guilty of making antisemitic remarks and imposed a fine of 5,000 euros.
The Vilnius Regional Court ruled that Remigijus Žemaitaitis had incited hatred against Jews, significantly downplayed the crimes of Nazi Germany, and belittled the Holocaust in an offensive and degrading manner.
The penalty was far below the prosecutors’ request, which sought a fine of 51,000 euros to be paid into a fund for victims of crime.
The case relates to social media posts and public statements he made in May and June 2023, in which he wrote, among other things: “Apparently, for our journalists and local Lithuanian Jews, the destruction of schools in Palestine is some kind of entertainment?!”
