Over 50 Deaths in Congo Linked to "Unknown Disease"
Stockholm, February 27 (Hibya) - The World Health Organization has reported the spread of a deadly "unknown disease" in a region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Latest WHO figures for Africa show 431 cases linked to the outbreak and 53 deaths since January.
Nearly half of the deaths occurred within 48 hours of symptom onset.
Preliminary investigations traced the outbreak's origin to three children under five who developed symptoms after consuming a bat carcass.
Symptoms included fever, headache, diarrhea, and fatigue, later progressing to hemorrhagic fever and death.
WHO stated in its report: "The remote location and weak healthcare infrastructure increase the risk of further spread".
