Presidential candidate sued in Romania
Bucharest, February 27 (Hibya) - A lawsuit has been filed against Calin Georgescu, who won the first round of last year's Romanian presidential elections, which were later annulled. He is accused of misreporting the financing of his election campaign.
Romanian prosecutors today filed six charges against Calin Georgescu, who won the first round of the presidential elections in November, but whose victory was declared invalid by the country's Constitutional Court.
The indictment claims that Georgescu lied about the financing of his election campaign and supported the "Iron Guard," a fascist political party that operated in Romania during World War II and is now banned by law.
Georgescu had claimed that he did not spend any money on his campaign. However, following an electoral appeal, the Constitutional Court found that many social media posts, particularly on TikTok, were funded by a foreign state. Additionally, large donations to his campaign through social media were not properly reported.
The presidential elections are scheduled to be repeated in May, but it remains unclear whether Georgescu will run again.
The annulment of the first round of voting and the charges against Georgescu have been condemned by his supporters, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and billionaire Elon Musk.
