19 killed in attack on Chad presidential complex
Stockholm, January 10 (Hibya) – A spokesman for the Chadian government announced that 18 attackers and one presidential guard were killed in an attack on the presidential complex in the capital N'Djamena on Wednesday night.
Abderaman Koulamallah, who also serves as the foreign minister, said the attackers tried to storm the presidential palace while President Mahamat Déby Itno was inside.
In a statement on Thursday morning, Koulamallah said that 24 attackers armed with knives and machetes arrived at the presidential palace with several vehicles that appeared broken. They exited the vehicles, attacked four entrance guards, killing one and injuring two others. They then entered the complex, where the guards opened fire, killing 18 and arresting six.
Like other countries in the region, Chad has been repeatedly attacked by rebel groups linked to ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram for over a decade.
However, Koulamallah said Wednesday's attack was "probably" not a terrorist act and referred to the attackers as drunken "Pieds Nickelés," referencing a French comic series.
