It was announced that Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Catholics and the Head of the Vatican State, passed away this morning.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev shared a message of condolence.

Aliyev’s message reads as follows:

"His Holiness Pope Francis made invaluable contributions to the development of friendship and cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Holy See. I will always fondly remember our meetings and sincere conversations. The precious memory and rich spiritual legacy of Pope Francis will forever live in our hearts. Sharing the sorrow of this profound loss, I extend my deepest condolences to you, the Holy See, and all believers on behalf of myself and the people of Azerbaijan."
