Amnesty: Trump's First 100 Days Accelerated the Global "Freefall of Rights"
London, April 29 (Hibya) – Amnesty International stated today that the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency "accelerated" the global decline in human rights and warned that the world is being pushed toward an authoritarian era defined by impunity and unchecked corporate power.
In its annual report on the state of human rights in 150 countries, the organization said that the immediate outcomes following Trump’s second term included the undermining of decades of progress and the emboldening of authoritarian leaders.
The report, which mentions a "freefall" in human rights, linked the growing inaction on the climate crisis, violent repression of dissent, and increasing backlash against the rights of migrants, refugees, women, girls, and LGBTQ+ individuals to the so-called Trump effect.
Amnesty warned that the situation would further deteriorate this year as Trump continues to dismantle the rules-based world order that Washington helped build after the devastation of World War II.
The report also documents that mass arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and deadly use of force have increasingly become common tools of repression.
Amnesty noted that Trump’s extensive foreign aid cuts further worsened global conditions, shutting down vital programs in countries like Yemen and Syria, and depriving children and conflict victims of access to food, shelter, and healthcare.
Amnesty also expressed concern over failures to enforce international humanitarian law, citing Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard stated, “Trump has done nothing but show contempt for universal human rights; he emboldened anti-rights movements worldwide and unleashed corporate allies.”
