BBC: New Israel-Gaza ceasefire plan proposed
London, April 22 (Hibya) – A senior Palestinian official familiar with Israel-Hamas ceasefire negotiations told the BBC that Qatari and Egyptian mediators have proposed a new formula to end the war in Gaza.
According to the official, the plan envisions a ceasefire lasting between five and seven years, the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, an official end to the war, and Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza.
A senior Hamas delegation was expected to arrive in Cairo for consultations.
The previous ceasefire collapsed a month ago after Israel resumed bombing Gaza, with both sides blaming each other for the failure to maintain the truce.
Israel has not commented on the mediators' proposal.
Meanwhile, a health official from the Hamas-run Ministry of Health told the BBC that 22 Palestinians have been killed since Monday evening in a series of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
The official said the victims were in Khan Younis, Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Gaza City, with another 45 people injured.
Local residents and eyewitnesses described the airstrikes as “extremely intense.”
According to witnesses, the strikes destroyed dozens of bulldozers and heavy machinery used by Hamas-run municipalities to reopen roads, clear debris, and rescue victims trapped under rubble.
Tank movements were also observed in the southern part of Rafah city in southern Gaza.
As Israeli attacks continue, high-level talks are expected in Cairo, with Hamas represented by political council head Mohammed Darwish and chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.
The meeting follows Hamas’s recent rejection of Israel’s latest offer, which included a demand for Hamas’s disarmament in exchange for a six-week ceasefire.
On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would not end the war until Hamas was destroyed and all hostages returned. Hamas, in turn, demands that Israel commit to ending the war before any hostage release.
The Palestinian official said Hamas has indicated willingness to transfer Gaza’s administration to a “nationally and regionally agreed-upon” Palestinian entity, which could be the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority or a newly formed administrative body.
