EU "seriously concerned" about vote in Ukrainian parliament
Stockholm, July 23 (Hibya) - The European Commission on Tuesday said it is "seriously concerned" about the effective elimination of the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office in the Ukrainian parliament. This reveals the depth of dissatisfaction in Brussels, where criticism of Kyiv is very rare.
Several European Commission members also issued warnings to the Ukrainian government on social media. Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said she had an "open discussion" with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka regarding EU integration. Kos stated that she expressed "serious concerns" about recent developments concerning the rule of law.
Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius warned, "Trust between a country at war and its leadership is more important than modern weapons; it is difficult to build and maintain, but easily lost due to a single major mistake by the leadership."
Meaghan Mobbs, daughter of the US Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg, described the MPs' decision as "incredibly stupid" and characterized it as a gift to those criticizing further military aid to Ukraine resisting Russian aggression.
