Explosion of old ammunition in Syria kills 16
Stockholm, March 16 (Hibya) - Authorities reported that at least 16 people were killed in Syria on Sunday after a scrap collector mishandled an old bomb, causing a powerful explosion.
On Saturday, an explosion in the city of Latakia collapsed a four-story building. Rescue workers spent the night extracting bodies, including five children, from the rubble, and search efforts for survivors continue.
The Syrian Civil Defense team stated that the explosion occurred in a hardware store within a residential building, killing 16 people.
A Telegram post reported at least 18 injuries and added: "Search and rescue operations continue to recover those trapped." The explosion was caused by the scrap collector mishandling an unexploded ordnance while attempting to salvage metal from it.
Images from Syria's Sana news agency showed a column of smoke rising above the crowded southern neighborhood of Al Rimal in Latakia, along with a pile of rubble where the building once stood.
The agency reported that the explosion occurred as the scrap collector tried to dismantle the unexploded ordnance to extract metal from it.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the incident as an "accident."
