First female Mayor of Mexico's Cotija shot dead
Stockholm, June 5 (Hibya) - Just hours after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected the first woman President in Mexico's two hundred years of democracy, the Mayor of the Mexican town of Cotija was shot dead.
Yolanda Sánchez, who was elected the first woman Mayor of Cotija three years ago, received death threats after her election and was held hostage by gangs for three days last year. Mexican media reported that 19 bullets killed Yolanda Sánchez.
During the election campaign in Mexico, more than thirty candidates were killed, and hundreds received police protection due to threats.
