Former footballer nominated for presidency in Georgia
Tbilisi, November 27 (Hibya) - Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream, has nominated former football star Mikheil Kavelashvili as its candidate for the presidential election scheduled for December 14.
Georgian Dream retained its majority in the controversial parliamentary elections of October 26, which sparked heated debates and widespread allegations of electoral fraud.
The country’s current president, Salome Zurabishvili, called for the elections to be annulled, while the opposition boycotted the parliament.
Kavelashvili was a well-known footballer who, among other things, played for Manchester City in the English Premier League between 1995 and 2006. He became a Member of Parliament in 2016.
