G7 leaders gather under shadow of Israel-Iran conflict
Stockholm, June 16 (Hibya) – Leaders of the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) gathered on Sunday in the remote town of Kananaskis, Alberta, located at the foot of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, for three days of intensive talks.
This will be the 51st G7 summit. The first summit was held in 1975 in Rambouillet, France. At the time, Canada was not yet a member, so the summit was known as a G6 meeting.
G7 leaders are meeting in Kananaskis for three days of discussions.
Russia joined the forum in 1998, forming the G8, but was effectively expelled in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea. Since then, the forum has been referred to again as the G7.
This year’s summit, held from June 15 to 17, is expected to be tense for several reasons.
Following Israel’s heavy attacks on military and nuclear facilities in Iran on Friday, intense discussions on the growing Middle East crisis are anticipated. This year’s meeting also takes place in the backdrop of aggressive trade tariffs announced earlier this year by U.S. President Donald Trump, which were later suspended for all countries except China. China has now reached an agreement with the U.S.
