Genocide survivors urge young Europeans to vote against the far right
Stockholm, June 5 (Hibya) - A group of survivors of Nazi persecution have issued a joint appeal ahead of this weekend's European Parliament elections, urging young voters to go to the polls and exercise their right to prevent the far right from gaining power.
“To our grandchildren, to first-time voters, to all democrats,” the eight survivors of the Nazi genocide wrote in a letter that begins, “For millions of you, the European Parliament election is the first election of your life. For many of us, it may be the last. We could not prevent the rise of Nazism then, but you can today.”
The open letter was coordinated by Avaaz, a global citizen web movement that campaigns for greater voter participation in elections and promotes people power.
Around 373 million citizens in the 27 member states of the European Union are eligible to vote on June 6-9 to determine the composition of the European Parliament.
