Georgia's ruling party leads ahead of pro-EU opposition in key election
Stockholm, October 27 (Hibya) - Georgia's ruling party is leading in a significant parliamentary election seen as a decisive vote for the country's longstanding EU membership aspirations.
The election commission stated that early official results, with 70% of precincts counted, show the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party winning 53% of the vote.
However, a united bloc of pro-Western opposition parties also claimed victory, saying they had secured a common majority, paving the way for a confrontation over the Caucasian country's future.
Voters in the country of approximately 4 million went to the polls on Saturday to decide whether the GD will secure another four-year term, continuing a course closer to Russia.
If central election forecasts hold, the GD will gain a parliamentary majority, disappointing the pro-Western coalition and effectively halting the country's EU integration aspirations.
