Ghebreyesus: Cholera cases increased by 13 percent in 2023
Geneva, September 6 (Hibya)—World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the WHO published new data on cholera in 2023, with cases increasing by 13 percent.
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus stated that the number of reported deaths increased by 71 percent compared to 2022; the number of cases increased by 13 percent.
He highlighted that the global cholera crisis has led to a severe shortage of cholera vaccines: "Only half of the required amount was produced last year. We are calling on manufacturers planning to enter the market to accelerate their efforts and offer doses at affordable prices."
Ghebreyesus added that while vaccination is important, safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene remain the only long-term and sustainable solutions to ending cholera outbreaks and preventing future epidemics.
