Guterres: I invite everyone to work towards reducing regional tensions
New York, August 2(Hibya)—United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on parties in the Middle East to work resolutely to reduce regional tensions for long-term peace and stability.
UN Secretary-General Guterres emphasized that the attacks observed in the Israeli-occupied Golan, Southern Beirut, and Tehran represent a dangerous escalation at a time when efforts should be made to seek a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages, significantly increasing humanitarian aid to Palestinians, and ensuring calm along the Blue Line in Lebanon.
Recalling his constant call for maximum restraint, Guterres said: "However, in this extremely sensitive period, it is becoming increasingly clear that restraint alone is not enough. I invite everyone to work resolutely towards reducing regional tensions for long-term peace and stability."
Guterres stressed that the international community must urgently work together to prevent actions that could have devastating consequences for civilians and drag the entire Middle East into disaster, stating: "The way to achieve this is to take comprehensive diplomatic steps to reduce regional tensions."
