Harris and Trump agree to TV debate rules
Washington, September 5 (Hibya)—ABC's presidential debate in Philadelphia next week will be held between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The network said the candidates have agreed to the rules, including muting microphones while the other candidate speaks.
ABC News announced that Harris, the Democratic nominee, and Trump, her Republican rival, “have qualified for the debate based on established criteria and have both agreed to the following debate rules.”
The Trump and Harris campaign teams have been at odds over debate guidelines, including whether microphones should be turned off when it is not a candidate's turn to speak. The Harris campaign had previously pushed for live or “hot” microphones, arguing that this would “fully allow for important exchanges between the candidates.” Trump's campaign, meanwhile, has been pushing for them to be turned off.
The statement released by ABC made it clear that the candidates' microphones will only be on for the candidate whose turn it is to speak and will be muted when it is another candidate's turn to speak.
It also said the debate would last 90 minutes with two commercial breaks and would be moderated by two seated moderators, ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis, who would be the only people asking questions. There will be no audience in the room.
