Harvard University sues Trump over frozen school funding
Washington, April 22 (Hibya) – Harvard University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the United States, filed a lawsuit yesterday against former President Donald Trump’s administration. The dispute arose after Harvard refused to comply with Trump’s demands for sweeping changes in governance, recruitment, and admissions processes.
The U.S. administration claims that these changes are necessary to combat antisemitism on campus.
Trump froze funding to Harvard after the university board refused to implement his demands and further threatened to revoke the school’s tax-exempt status if it did not comply.
The complaint filed in federal court in Massachusetts stated: “This lawsuit concerns the government’s attempt to use the withdrawal of federal funds as leverage to control academic decision-making at Harvard.” The complaint also cited similar threats Trump made toward other universities and educational institutions.
Harvard President Alan M. Garber said in an open letter to students that as a Jewish American, he is aware of the dangers of rising antisemitism and takes the university’s role in combating it seriously. However, he stressed that this goal cannot be achieved by yielding to the government’s illegitimate demands to control hiring or curriculum.
