Indonesia Becomes a Full Member of BRICS
Moscow, January 7 (Hibya) — The Brazilian government, the current chair of BRICS, officially announced that the Republic of Indonesia has become a full member of the BRICS group.
The statement also noted that Indonesia's candidacy was approved by group leaders at the Johannesburg summit in August 2023.
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Indonesia's potential to enhance cooperation among Global South countries.
Earlier, Eduardo Paes Saboia, Secretary for Asia and the Pacific at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and BRICS Sherpa (an expert chosen by the president to assist in summit preparations), stated that the Brazilian government supports the inclusion of new participants in the group. Additionally, it was announced in December that Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan would join the union as partner countries.
Indonesia, with a population of over 252 million, is the world's fourth most populous country and has the largest Muslim population globally.
