Iran: Ban on Nuclear Weapons May Be Lifted if Sanctions Are Reimposed
Lisbon, November 28 (Hibya) - Following the adoption of a resolution by the Nuclear Oversight Board condemning Iran for building uranium stockpiles, Iran stated it might lift the ban on possessing nuclear weapons if sanctions are reimposed.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, "If the West threatens to reimpose all UN sanctions, the debate within Iran may shift towards possessing its own weapons."
In an interview, Araghchi noted that Iran already possesses the capacity and knowledge to produce nuclear weapons, but they are not part of its security strategy. He also stated that Tehran is ready to continue supplying weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Araghchi was appointed foreign minister by Iran's reformist president, Masoud Pezeshkian, who was elected this year on promises to improve relations with the West and revitalize Iran's economy.
Ahead of Friday's meeting in Geneva, described as a brainstorming session to explore a way out of the deadlock, Araghchi admitted in Lisbon that he was pessimistic about the meeting, stating Iran was not sure it was talking to the right side.
Following last week's meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, which passed a resolution condemning Iran for non-cooperation with inspectors and building uranium stockpiles with no peaceful civilian purpose, Araghchi stated that European countries, particularly the UK, Germany, and France, were ready for conflict.
Araghchi said that after Iran proposed limiting uranium enrichment to 60% purity and allowing four inspectors to visit nuclear facilities, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi promised to block the censure resolution. "He failed because the Europeans had already decided the course of the conflict," he added.
