Italy outraged by plan to name Milan airport after Berlusconi
Rome, 10 July (Hibya) - Reaction is growing in Italy against the decision to name Milan's main airport after controversial former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, with the city's mayor describing the decision as "madness".
More than 35,000 people signed a petition calling on Giorgia Meloni's government to halt the plan after Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said that the Italian civil aviation authority Enac would finalise the decision to rename Malpensa airport "in memory of my friend Silvio".
Milan Mayor Beppe Sala accused Enac of bowing to pressure from right-wing politicians and claimed that the decision was taken without consulting SEA, the company that runs Milan's airports.
Berlusconi was born in Milan and died there last year at the age of 86. His Forza Italia party is a partner in Meloni's ruling coalition.
