Brussels, January 9 (Hibya) – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas said she condemns the intervention of security forces against protests that have been ongoing for weeks in Iran.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas issued a statement on the ongoing social unrest in Iran and the interventions against demonstrators.
Emphasizing the struggle of the Iranian people, Kallas said: “The Iranian people are fighting for their future. By ignoring the legitimate demands of the people, the regime is showing its true face. Images coming from Tehran reveal that security forces are intervening in a disproportionate and harsh manner.”
Criticizing violence against demonstrators, Kallas stated: “Violence against peaceful protesters is unacceptable.”
Drawing attention to digital restrictions, Kallas concluded her statement by saying: “Shutting down the internet while violently suppressing protests reveals a regime that fears its own people.”
