Commission President Leyen said they gathered in Rome to celebrate the beginning of Pope Leo XIV's papacy.

She noted that since the day of his election, the Pope has conveyed a deep message of peace and said: “Peace achieved through understanding and determination. This is a message that resonates deeply around the world and especially on our continent.”

Leyen emphasized that peace in Europe cannot be taken for granted: “It must be cultivated, cared for, and valued. As Pope Leo XIV begins his teaching ministry, let us accompany him in his vision: Peace is a miracle we are all called to shape.”

She also said that the Pope’s emphasis on the church’s social teaching deeply encouraged her, adding: “The common good and human dignity must be at the heart of the major transformations shaping our world.”
