Liberals Lead in Canadian Elections
Ottawa, April 29 (Hibya) – Canada's Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, secured an election victory after a dramatic reversal of fortune.
Once written off just months ago, the party made a stunning comeback and secured a fourth term after Donald Trump’s threats energized its campaign.
Late Monday, according to national broadcaster CBC, the Liberals had either won or were leading in enough seats to prevent another party from forming government. As results rolled in from Canada’s Atlantic provinces and the vote-rich Quebec and Ontario, supporters at the Liberal election night party erupted in cheers.
It was not immediately clear whether the Liberals had won enough seats for a majority government. A minority government would mean Carney’s party would need the support of political rivals to govern. After a narrow win in the previous federal election, the Liberals had relied on the left-leaning New Democratic Party to pass legislation.
The victory represents a remarkable rebound for a party that was recently headed toward electoral disaster. Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, served as prime minister for nearly 10 years, but the twilight of his leadership was marked by repeated threats of rebellion, bitter infighting, and a weary electorate.
