Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake in Peru
Stockholm, June 16 (Hibya) – A 6.1 magnitude earthquake, centered 30 km southwest of Callao and at a depth of 49 km, struck Lima and the country’s main port at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, June 15, causing panic and the evacuation of homes, offices, and shopping centers.
According to the official report from the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), one person died in the Independencia district due to a collapsed wall, five others were injured and are receiving treatment in hospitals in the capital.
Damage was also reported in homes, shopping centers, and health facilities, along with interruptions to transport, electricity, and phone lines.
Authorities ruled out the risk of a tsunami and continue to assess the damage, advising the public to remain calm and check the condition of their homes in case of possible aftershocks.
So far, one death has been reported in the Independencia district due to the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Lima. Five people were injured and are being treated in various hospitals in the capital. Damage was also reported to roads and health facilities.
Transportation on Lima’s metro, which was suspended after the earthquake, has resumed.
