Media: Polish presidential election ends with nationalist Nawrocki's victory
Warsaw, June 2 (Hibya) – Poland’s National Electoral Commission announced that all votes have been counted, and several media outlets declared nationalist Karol Nawrocki as the winner. Nawrocki received around 51% of the vote compared to Rafal Trzaskowski’s 49%.
Nawrocki has no political experience but enjoys strong support from the conservative Law and Justice party.
Warsaw’s liberal and pro-European mayor Rafal Trzaskowski declared victory just before midnight when early polls showed him narrowly ahead. Final results are expected later in the morning.
The 42-year-old Nawrocki is a big admirer of former U.S. President Donald Trump, whom he visited during his campaign. He claims to have predicted Trump's victory. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also endorsed Nawrocki, saying it was urgent that he become Poland’s next president.
In a speech to his supporters shortly after the polls closed, Nawrocki said he was convinced of his victory and believed Poland would be saved.
Polls indicate that Nawrocki’s supporters want stricter immigration rules and stronger Polish sovereignty within the European Union. Trzaskowski’s voters favored social reforms and greater cooperation with the EU.
