Meloni: Our fight against residence permit trade will continue
Rome, June 11 (Hibya) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on new findings related to the residence permit system that facilitates illegal entry into the country.
Meloni recalled that a year ago, she had referred irregularities in the digital application system known as “click day” to the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office, noting that at the time, the government was criticized for that move.
However, over time, serious crimes such as digital identity forgery, fake hiring, mafia connections, and illegal acquisition of residence permits have emerged. Meloni emphasized that recent media reports present new “alarming” evidence on the issue.
She stated that thanks to the work of the judiciary and law enforcement, this organized criminal network has been uncovered. “We were right, and it was our duty to expose these irregularities,” said Meloni.
Meloni stressed that the government will continue its firm fight against illegal migration and the trade of residence permits, stating: “Italy is not a country for residence permit traffickers or those who enable illegal entry through cunning means.”
