In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 index closed 0.27 percent lower at 10,868.05 points, while Italy's FTSE MIB index rose 0.13 percent to 52,172.53 points.
Germany's DAX index stood at 25,629.24 points, France's CAC 40 index at 8,509.64 points, while the pan-European STOXX Europe 600 index traded flat at 649.19 points.
