Narendra Modi expected to win a third term in India
Stockholm, June 3 (Hibya) - Voting has ended in India's massive election, with exit polls predicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi will win a historic third term in an election marred by allegations of irregularities.
India's longest and largest election began in mid-April, with nearly one billion voters eligible to cast their ballots. As the election progressed in seven phases until June 1, a deadly heatwave gripped the country, with temperatures approaching 50C in some areas, killing dozens of voters and polling officials.
Counting will begin at 8 am on Tuesday, and results are expected to be announced the same day. Vote counting occurs simultaneously at counting centres in each of the 543 constituencies nationwide.
Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) look set for a decisive victory, according to exit polls released Saturday night. They could even win enough seats to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament, allowing the government to make sweeping constitutional changes.
