Nine dead and 48 missing after migrant boat sinks off Canary Islands
Madrid, September 29 (Hibya) - Nine people drowned and at least 48 others are missing after a boat carrying migrants capsized overnight off Spain's Canary Islands, rescuers said Saturday.
Sea rescue teams said in a statement that they responded to a distress call shortly after midnight off El Hierro, an island in the Atlantic archipelago. Crews managed to rescue 27 of the 84 people on board.
Anselmo Pestana, governor of the Canary Islands, said survivors told rescuers that the boat had set sail from Nuadibu in Mauritania, about 500 miles (about 800 km) away.
They also suggested there could have been as many as 90 people on board. Four of those rescued were minors, he added.
