Pentagon Orders Identification and Removal of Transgender U.S. Military Personnel
Washington, February 27 (Hibya) - According to a Pentagon directive submitted to court on Wednesday, transgender soldiers will be removed from the U.S. military unless they receive an exemption.
The court document states that being transgender is incompatible with military service, meaning that these individuals will be discharged within 60 days.
In January, Donald Trump signed an executive order directly targeting transgender soldiers. At one point, he stated that "a man identifying as a woman is inconsistent with the humility and self-sacrifice expected of a soldier."
This month, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. military will no longer allow transgender individuals to enlist and will cease performing or facilitating gender transition procedures for soldiers.
A directive released late Wednesday night went even further. It stated that the Pentagon must establish a procedure for identifying transgender soldiers within 30 days, and then begin removing them from the military within another 30 days.
The February 26 directive stated: "The policy of the United States government is to establish high standards for military readiness, lethality, discipline, integrity, humility, uniformity, and cohesion."
"This policy is inconsistent with the medical, surgical, and mental health restrictions imposed on individuals with gender dysphoria, those who have been diagnosed with it, those with a history of it, or those exhibiting symptoms consistent with it."
According to the Department of Defense, there are approximately 1.3 million active-duty personnel in the U.S. military. Transgender rights advocates estimate that up to 15,000 transgender service members exist, but Pentagon officials suggest the number is only a few thousand.
