Polish President halts emergency contraceptive pill
Stockholm, March 30 (Hibya) - Polish President Andrzej Duda is using his veto to stop government plans to ease restrictions on over-the-counter emergency contraceptive pills.
Andrzej Duda said in a statement that he has "decided to submit the amendment to the pharmaceutical law to parliament with a request to reconsider the law."
The country's Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently said that his government was ready to present a bill paving the way for abortion rights. This comes after the previous government of the right-wing Law and Justice party (PIS) introduced an almost complete ban on abortion in Poland. The government also announced an easing of restrictions on the morning-after pill.
President Duda is an ally of the PIS and did not approve the bill because, according to the statement, it "allows access to the pill without medical supervision and bypasses the role and responsibility of parents"
