President Zelensky's message on the anniversary of the Crimean Tatar Deportation
Vatican, May 18 (Hibya) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a message marking the 81st anniversary of the Crimean Tatar Deportation.
Zelensky recalled that 81 years ago, the Soviet regime began deporting the Crimean Tatar people.
He noted that an entire nation was expelled from its homeland, and thousands of people and countless families were forced on a journey that amounted to a death sentence: “At least one-third of the Crimean Tatar people died from disease, hunger, exhaustion, and mistreatment. A tragedy that must never be repeated. But in 2014, another Russian occupation of Crimea occurred, and unfortunately, thousands of families were once again separated.”
Emphasizing the renewed need to fight for freedom and homeland, Zelensky stated: “We honor the memory of all victims of the deportation. We remember how important it is for people to return to their homes. We continue to work to defend our independent state, our entire people, and all our territories.”
