Red Crescent: 8,000 Displaced from Gaza Hospital Evacuated
STOCKHOLM - 07.02.2024 - HIBYA - The Red Crescent announced that approximately 8,000 people have been evacuated from a hospital in the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, under siege.
According to a statement from the United Nations via UN News, Tommaso Della Longa, spokesperson for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said in a statement to journalists in Geneva: "The humanitarian situation in Gaza is beyond a disaster."
Della Longa also informed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that the Al-Amal hospital operated by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has been largely emptied following a prolonged siege by Israeli forces, adding:
"The person among 8,000 at the Palestinian Red Crescent hospital in Khan Yunis... left the hospital yesterday."
Della Longa noted that "Al-Amal" has been under siege for over two weeks, surrounded by heavy bombardment and fighting, saying about 100 elderly, injured, and disabled patients as well as about 100 ICRC staff and volunteers remain there.
Della Longa said that even before the evacuation, "Al-Amal" faced major challenges such as shortages of medicines, food, and water, stating, "Access to ambulances and replenishing stocks was almost impossible."
