Right-wing populist party becomes the biggest party in Thuringia, Germany
Berlin, September 2 (Hibya) - The right-wing populist, hardline Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is expected to become the largest party in Germany's Thuringia state parliamentary elections yesterday, according to an exit poll.
According to the poll, the AfD won 30.5 percent of the vote and 30 parliamentary seats, while the Christian Democrats came in second with 24.5 percent and 24 parliamentary seats.
If the exit polls are correct, it will be the first federal election in which the AfD is the largest party.
In Saxony, according to the exit polls, the Christian Democrats (CDU) remain in the lead with 31.5 percent of the vote, while the AfD is in second place with 30 percent. Accordingly, the CDU will have 43 parliamentary seats and the AfD 41.
The new left-wing party led by Söhru Wagenknecth won 12 percent of the vote in Saxony and 16 percent in Thuringia.
