Social Democrats lead in Romanian parliamentary elections
Bucharest, December 2 (Hibya) - Following last week's presidential elections, the Social Democrats appear to be heading towards securing the most votes in yesterday's parliamentary elections in Romania.
Romania's main center-left party is on track to top the parliamentary elections according to preliminary results. It appears to have defeated the rising far-right, buoyed by the shocking victory of a far-right nationalist presidential candidate in last week’s first-round voting.
With 90% of the votes counted, the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) has received 23.9% of the votes, while the far-right nationalist Romanian Union Alliance (AUR) has garnered 17.9%, the National Liberal Party (PNL) has 14.6%, and the center-right Save Romania Union (USR) has 11.1%.
This was the second of three consecutive elections, coming a week after the country was shocked by the victory of little-known far-right, pro-Russian independent Calin Georgescu in the opening round of the presidential vote.
Romania's Supreme Court has ordered a recount of the votes cast in the presidential election and is expected to rule on Monday on a request to annul the election entirely, submitted by second-place candidate Elena Lasconi of the pro-EU USR party, citing allegations of illegal election activity.
