South Korea experiences the heaviest snowfall in 100 years
Seoul, November 27 (Hibya) - According to South Korea's national media reports, the snowfall on November 27 in Seoul was recorded as the heaviest in November in the past 117 years, since the beginning of modern meteorological observations.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, 16.5 cm of snow fell in Seoul from the night of the 26th to the morning of the 27th. The deepest snowfall represents the maximum amount of snow that fell within a day. This is the heaviest November snowfall in Seoul since the beginning of modern meteorological observations in October 1907.
The previous record for the deepest snowfall in November in Seoul was 12.4 cm on November 28, 1972. This is about 4 cm more than the previous record. The heaviest snowfall ever recorded in Seoul was on March 24, 1922, with 31 cm.
The unusual snow in Seoul is said to be caused by a "common low-pressure system" and a "warm sea." The common low-pressure system forms due to the separation of the jet stream, a strong wind in the upper atmosphere that carries cold air from the Arctic. Currently, this common low-pressure system is located in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula.
