South Korea to hold new presidential election on June 3
Seoul, April 8 (Hibya) – South Korea announced on Tuesday that it will hold an early election on June 3 to choose a successor to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office last week over an attempt to declare martial law.
The country’s Constitutional Court officially removed Mr. Yoon from office on Friday after all eight judges unanimously approved the impeachment passed by the National Assembly in December.
After months of political turmoil that tested the resilience of its democracy and weakened its leadership, South Korea has since shifted its focus to the question of who should lead the country. By law, a new president must be elected within 60 days of the court’s decision.
Polls show that the main opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, is the leading candidate to replace Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed for declaring martial law.
