Spanish and French farmers block border crossings to protest EU environmental policy
Stockholm, June 4 (Hibya) – Nearly 3,000 French and Spanish farmers blocked the France-Spain border on Monday. Protests are expected to reach Brussels on Tuesday.
This time, tractors with banners and signs blocked many crossings on the highway on the France-Spain border, causing traffic chaos.
Seven major border crossings, from the Basque Country in southwestern France to Catalonia in eastern Spain, have been blocked to attract the attention of incoming members of the European Parliament.
Today's protests are about disgruntled farmers across the European continent protesting against rising costs, the EU's environmental policy and cheap food imports from other countries.
In Monday's demonstrations, farmers demanded the removal of taxes on energy used as a means of production in the agricultural sector, increased food safety in products imported to Europe, and the implementation of a European law prioritising local products.
Today's demonstrations are thanks to greater coordination between French and Spanish agricultural organizations, and there is a very specific reason why the two neighbouring countries have chosen to join forces. "We must now stand together to move forward," Spanish farmer Iñaki told Spanish television.
