Taiwan Reports Damage to Communication Cable Leading to the Island
Stockholm, January 7 (Hibya) - Taiwanese authorities reported damage to an underwater communication cable connecting the island but noted that local communication systems were not affected.
Taiwan's coast guard stated that it suspects the involvement of a ship registered in Cameroon and Tanzania in the incident that occurred over the weekend in the northeast of the island. However, due to poor weather conditions, coast guard officers could not board the ship, which headed towards Busan port in South Korea.
According to Taiwanese authorities, all seven sailors on the ship are Chinese nationals, and the vessel's owner is based in Hong Kong.
Taiwan promised to repair the cable by February 3.
Media recalls that in 2023, Taiwan accused two Chinese ships of damaging two internet cables leading to the Matsu Islands in the Taiwan Strait. However, Taipei found no indication that the act was intentional.
The Taiwan issue emerged in 1949 with the proclamation of the People's Republic of China and the relocation of part of the Kuomintang party to the island of Taiwan, which became known as the Republic of China in Taiwan. Beijing insists on the "One China Principle," under which both the PRC and the Republic of China in Taiwan cannot be simultaneously recognized. Nonetheless, almost all major countries have unofficial cultural and economic offices in Taipei.
