Thailand bans plastic waste imports to reduce toxic pollution
Bangkok, January 8 (Hibya) — Experts warn that failing to reach a global agreement to reduce plastic waste will harm human health, as Thailand bans plastic waste imports due to concerns about toxic pollution.
After years of campaigning by activists, a law banning plastic waste imports came into effect this month in Thailand.
Historically, Thailand has been one of the few Southeast Asian countries paid to accept plastic waste from developed nations.
After China, the world's largest market for domestic waste, imposed a ban, Thailand became a leading destination for plastic waste exports from Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan in 2018.
Japan became one of the largest exporters of plastic waste to Thailand, exporting approximately 50 million kilograms in 2023.
Thai customs officials reported that more than 1.1 million tons of plastic waste were imported between 2018 and 2021.
