Thousands protest against violence against women in France
Paris, November 24 (Hibya) - Thousands of people took to the streets in major French cities, including Paris, to protest against violence against women. A globally highlighted rape case was the main driving force behind the protests.
Organizers hope that the nation will learn lessons from the case currently being heard in French courts, where 51 men are being tried for violence, including a husband accused of raping his wife while she was unconscious. The husband gave his wife a sedative and recorded a video showing other men raping her.
Many protesters carried banners with demands such as shifting the shame from the victim to the perpetrator. Among these demands were the words of Gisele Pelicot, the wife in the rape case, who insists on a public trial for her husband and other perpetrators.
Other key demands highlighted in the protest included establishing the concept of consent, as silence does not always mean consent.
