Tourist boats capsize in China: Nine dead, one missing
Beijing, May 5 (Hibya) – In southwest China, strong winds caused four tourist boats to capsize, leaving at least nine dead and 70 people hospitalized.
According to state media, sudden strong winds overturned boats on a river in Qianxi, Guizhou, on Sunday, throwing 84 people into the water. All but one were rescued.
The incident occurred during the end of China’s weeklong May 1 holiday, a busy travel season.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping previously called for “full-scale efforts” in the search and rescue operations.
State media reported that President Xi emphasized the importance of strengthening safety measures following recent similar accidents.
Authorities across China were also instructed to enhance public safety measures during peak tourism periods.
Sunday’s incident comes just two months after a similar accident in Hunan province, where a passenger boat collided with an industrial vessel, killing 11 people.
