Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban
Washington, December 28 (Hibya) - Lawyers for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump have asked the Supreme Court to delay the implementation of a law banning the social media platform TikTok. The law is new and therefore requires urgent evaluation of its provisions. The President believes he can resolve the issue through political means.
The law is set to take effect on January 20, one day before Trump takes office. In a letter to the Supreme Court, Trump’s lawyers stated that the law is complex and relatively new. Time is needed to address its issues and give Trump a chance to resolve it politically.
Many American politicians fear that Chinese officials could easily access personal data on the platform through ByteDance and use it for espionage against Americans. They also believe the platform could target young users with propaganda and suppress criticism against them.
During his first term, Trump was strongly opposed to TikTok’s activities. He encouraged American companies, even with federal support, to buy the business. His successor, Joe Biden, went a step further by enacting a law completely banning the platform in the United States.
In a recent interview, Trump changed his stance, saying competition is necessary. "If TikTok doesn’t succeed, we’re left with only Facebook and Instagram. As you know, they’re Zuckerberg’s," he said.
Facebook temporarily banned Trump after his supporters stormed the Capitol nearly four years ago, claiming he could use the platform to incite further unrest. Facebook is part of Meta Group, owned by Mark Zuckerberg.
