UN Security Council approves US-backed hostages-for-ceasefire deal
New York, June 11 (Hibya) - The UN Security Council has approved the US-backed hostages-for-ceasefire deal. Only Russia abstained from voting on the plan to exchange hostages and prisoners in a six-week ceasefire, paving the way for a broader agreement.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Hamas to accept the hostage-for-hostage proposal for a three-phase ceasefire outlined by Joe Biden, marking the first time it has endorsed a comprehensive peace deal to end the Gaza war.
A statement from Hamas said the group welcomed the resolution, but it was not immediately clear whether it meant the leadership in Gaza had accepted the ceasefire plan.
After the vote, US President Joe Biden wrote to X:
"The UN Security Council has just adopted our resolution calling on Hamas to accept a ceasefire agreement with the release of hostages. Hamas says it wants a ceasefire. This agreement is an opportunity to prove they are serious."
The Israeli government's position is also ambiguous. The government has formally accepted the peace plan. Still, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has sought to distance himself from it, and his coalition has moved to the right since the proposal was put forward.
