US Secretary of State Rubio Plans to Meet with Panama Canal Officials
Washington, February 2 (Hibya) - The new US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, traveled to Panama yesterday. US President Donald Trump stated that Rubio would meet with Panama Canal officials and added that the canal should return to US control.
Last week, Rubio said that Trump's interest in the Panama Canal would be the focal point of his visit to Panama.
There was significant tension between Trump and the Panamanian government, especially after Trump did not rule out the use of military force to secure American control over the canal.
Trump's statements were met with strong protests from the people and government of Panama.
The President of Panama stated that control over the canal was not open for discussion but expressed his willingness to discuss migration and drug trafficking issues with Rubio.
After visiting Panama, the US Secretary of State will travel to Central American countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.
